What is GEO? Getting ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity to recommend your business.

Search changed shape. Your customers no longer scan a list of links — they ask an AI and take the answer. This guide explains what GEO is, how it differs from SEO, and the five concrete levers we apply at ZeniTech — on our own companies first.

Short answer

GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) is the set of practices that get an AI answer engine — ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity, Google AI Mode — to cite or recommend your business when a customer asks it a question. SEO aims for a rank in a list of links; GEO aims to be the source used inside a written answer. It rests on five levers: a consistent entity, linked structured data, an llms.txt file, content that answers with real numbers, and mentions on third-party sites.

Why it matters now

An AI answer has no page two. When someone asks “which payment platform handles commission splits for agencies?” or “best AI travel agency in the US”, the model names two or three companies and stops. Either you are in that answer, or you do not exist for that customer. AI-referred traffic is still small in volume, but it is extremely qualified: the person has already explained their need and received a recommendation.

The five levers of GEO

1. A consistent entity

Models do not rank pages; they decide which entities they trust. Same name, same description, same positioning everywhere: website, social profiles, directories, business registries. Two sites using the same name for two different activities, or an Instagram bio that contradicts the website, and the model cites nobody.

2. Structured data that links together

schema.org JSON-LD on every page — but linked: each brand gets a stable @id and declares its parent (parentOrganization), its founder (founder) and its subsidiaries (subOrganization). A group with four brands across four domains must expose the same graph on all four.

3. An llms.txt file

A Markdown file at the root of the site stating in plain language who you are, what you do, your key facts and your important pages. It is, for language models, what the sitemap is for Google — and almost nobody has one yet.

4. Citable content

Not “10 tips for…” blog posts. Pages that answer a precise question people actually ask an AI — “how much does a week-long yacht charter cost in 2026?” — with a short answer up front, a table of figures, named sources and a marked-up FAQ. Those are the pages models quote verbatim.

5. Third-party mentions

A model trusts three people talking about you on Reddit or in an article more than ten pages on your own site. Reviews, Reddit, Quora, industry directories, local press, podcasts: the slowest lever, and the decisive one.

What to open in robots.txt

To be cited, you have to be readable. Explicitly allow GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, ChatGPT-User, ClaudeBot, Claude-SearchBot, PerplexityBot and Google-Extended on your public pages, and block private areas (accounts, APIs, dashboards). Many sites block these crawlers by default without knowing it, through a CDN setting or a plugin.

How ZeniTech works on GEO

We apply these five levers to the group’s own companies first — Zeniva Travel, ZeniPay, ZeniCorp and ZeniTech — then sell what we have tested. Every engagement starts with a free diagnostic: we ask the models the questions your customers ask them, note who they recommend, and show you the gap.

Frequently asked questions

What is GEO?

GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) is the set of practices that get an AI answer engine — ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity, Google AI Mode — to cite or recommend your business when a customer asks it a question. Where SEO aims for a rank in a list of links, GEO aims to be the source used inside a written answer.

How is GEO different from SEO?

SEO optimizes pages to be ranked by Google; GEO optimizes an entity — the company, its brands, its founder — to be understood, trusted and cited by language models. GEO builds on technical SEO but adds entity consistency, linked structured data, llms.txt files, content that answers a question with real numbers, and mentions on third-party sites.

How long does GEO take to show results?

Typically 3 to 6 months for answer engines to recrawl the site, reconcile the entities and start citing the content, and 6 to 12 months for a measurable effect. Technical fixes take days; third-party mentions are continuous work.

Should I allow or block AI crawlers?

To be cited, you have to be readable. Explicitly allow GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot and Google-Extended on your public pages in robots.txt, while still blocking private areas such as accounts, APIs and dashboards.

What is an llms.txt file?

A Markdown text file placed at the root of a site (example.com/llms.txt) that states in plain language who the company is, what it does, its key facts and its important pages, so language models can understand it without interpreting the whole site.

How much does a GEO engagement cost?

An audit and the technical setup are measured in days of work; citable content and third-party mentions are a recurring monthly effort. ZeniTech quotes each engagement after a free diagnostic of how the business currently appears in AI answers.
