Short answer
For a simple site that you will edit yourself, a builder like Wix or Squarespace is usually the better deal: about US$1,000 to US$1,400 in plan fees over three years on Wix Core or Business, and real-user data shows builder sites pass Google's Core Web Vitals more often than the average website. A custom website costs more up front but makes sense when the site has to integrate with your systems, be fully bilingual, rank against strong competitors, or move to another host one day. Wix states that a Wix site must run on Wix's servers, so you cannot take it with you.
The short answer
Choose a builder if the site is a brochure for a small business, the budget is tight, and someone on your team will enjoy maintaining it. Choose a custom build when the website is a sales or operations tool: it feeds a CRM, takes bookings with business rules, publishes in several languages with proper hreflang, or needs features no template offers.
Builders are not a beginner's compromise. In Clutch's August 2025 survey of 406 US small business owners, 41% built their site on a no-code builder such as Wix or Squarespace, 34% on a low-code platform such as WordPress or Shopify, and 12% with fully custom code. Most small businesses choose a builder, and many are right to.
The real trade-off is control. With a builder you rent a platform that handles hosting, security and updates for you, and you accept its limits. With a custom site you own the code and can change anything, but someone has to maintain it.
What each option really costs over three years
Comparing a monthly plan with a one-time quote is misleading. The fair comparison is the total paid over three years, including hosting and maintenance. The table below uses published plan prices and ZeniTech's own prices, with our arithmetic. Your own time spent building and editing a builder site is not counted, and it is often the largest cost.
Two caveats on builder prices. Wix's pricing page shows a 'Save 50%' promotion on some plans and states that prices and currency vary by location, so renewal prices can differ from the first year. Domain names are extra everywhere after any first-year voucher.
| Option | What you pay | 3-year total (our arithmetic) |
|---|---|---|
| Squarespace Core, DIY | CA$32/month, annual billing | CA$1,152 (approx. US$813) |
| Squarespace Advanced, DIY | CA$109/month, annual billing | CA$3,924 (approx. US$2,770) |
| Wix Core, DIY | US$29/month, annual billing | US$1,044 (approx. CA$1,479) |
| Wix Business, DIY | US$39/month, annual billing | US$1,404 (approx. CA$1,989) |
| Wix Business + freelancer setup | Plan, plus an assumed 30 hours at US$25–$49/hour | US$2,154–$2,874 (approx. CA$3,052–$4,072) |
| ZeniTech brochure site | From CA$3,500, plus CA$150/month hosting and maintenance | From CA$8,900 (approx. US$6,282) |
| ZeniTech professional site | CA$7,500, plus CA$150/month hosting and maintenance | CA$12,900 (approx. US$9,105) |
ZeniTech arithmetic, not vendor quotes. Squarespace prices from its Canadian pricing page and Wix prices as reported by Website Builder Expert (updated September 15, 2026), both annual billing, taxes excluded. The 30-hour setup is an assumption; the hourly range is Clutch's most common rate for website-builder specialists (September 2026). Speed and Core Web Vitals: builders do well
Here the honest answer surprises people: on real-user data, builder sites pass Google's Core Web Vitals more often than the average website. The HTTP Archive Technology Report combines the Chrome UX Report with technology detection. For August 2026, on mobile, 81.2% of Wix origins had good Core Web Vitals, against 53.0% for all origins measured.
The same data shows that 'custom' is not automatically fast. Sites detected as built with Next.js, a popular framework for custom builds, passed on mobile only 35.1% of the time. Speed comes from how a site is built and maintained, not from the label. A custom site can beat a builder, but only if performance is a stated requirement with measured targets.
Google's targets are a Largest Contentful Paint within 2.5 seconds, an Interaction to Next Paint under 200 milliseconds and a Cumulative Layout Shift under 0.1. Google also notes that it always seeks to show the most relevant content, even when page experience is sub-par, so speed helps but does not replace relevance.
| Platform (as detected) | Mobile origins with good Core Web Vitals, August 2026 | Mobile origins measured |
|---|---|---|
| Wix | 81.2% | about 190,000 |
| Shopify | 76.5% | about 444,000 |
| Squarespace | 72.1% | about 94,000 |
| Webflow | 71.2% | about 61,000 |
| All websites | 53.0% | about 8.7 million |
| WordPress | 48.7% | about 2.75 million |
| Next.js | 35.1% | about 375,000 |
HTTP Archive Technology Report API, CrUX dataset dated 2026-08-01, geography and rank set to all, percentages computed by ZeniTech from good origins divided by origins tested. An origin passes when its LCP, INP and CLS are all good at the 75th percentile.
SEO and GEO: how much control you get
Is Wix good for SEO? For most small sites, yes: Wix and Squarespace let you edit page titles, meta descriptions, URLs and redirects, and they generate sitemaps. Where builders run out of room is in the details that matter on competitive searches: fine control over structured data, page templates designed around search intent, bilingual sites with exact hreflang pairs, programmatic pages generated from data, and how scripts load.
GEO, the work of being cited in AI answers such as Google's AI Overviews, does not require a special platform. Google states there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, and no special AI text files, markup or schema are needed. What helps is the same as for SEO: clear pages that answer the question first, facts that are easy to quote, and consistent information across the web. A builder can do this if you write well; a custom build makes it easier to structure content at scale.
- Titles, descriptions, headings, image alt text: available on both.
- 301 redirects when you migrate: available on both; check how many a builder allows before a large migration.
- Structured data: builders add some automatically; a custom site can describe every page type exactly.
- Multilingual SEO: builders offer translation features; a custom site gives full control over URLs, hreflang and separate content per language.
- Scripts and performance budget: on a builder, the platform decides much of what loads; on a custom site, you do.
Ownership and portability: can you export?
This is the biggest structural difference. Wix's Help Center states that 'since Wix is a SaaS solution, your site must run on Wix's servers', and that its architecture does not support external hosting. You can connect a domain you own, but if you leave Wix you rebuild the site elsewhere.
Squarespace offers a partial export to an .xml file designed for WordPress. According to its Help Center, layout pages, one blog, text and image blocks export, but store pages, product blocks, video blocks, other page types, style settings and custom CSS do not. It is a content rescue, not a migration.
With a custom build, portability depends on the contract. The code should sit in a repository in your name, the hosting account should be yours, and you should have a written assignment of rights. Then any competent developer can take over, and you can move hosts in hours.
- Always register the domain in your own name, whatever platform you choose.
- On a builder, keep your own copies of text, images and product data outside the platform.
- On a custom site, ask for the repository, hosting and analytics accounts in your name from day one.
Integrations: where custom sites earn their price
Builders connect well to popular tools through their app markets: email marketing, simple booking, payments, chat. The limit appears when a process is specific to your business: a quote form that calculates a price from your own rules, a booking flow tied to crew availability, a client portal, or data that must sync both ways with an ERP or accounting system.
At that point you either chain several paid apps and automations around the builder or build the feature properly. A custom site, or a builder site with a custom back end next to it, lets the website become part of your operations rather than a brochure that emails you form submissions.
When a builder is the right answer
Often. If your goal is to be findable, look credible and receive calls or form submissions, a well-made builder site is enough, and the money saved can go into content, photos and Google Business Profile work, which usually matter more for a local business.
- You need five to fifteen pages and a contact form.
- One person will update the site regularly and wants to do it without a developer.
- Your budget for the first year is under a few thousand dollars.
- You compete locally, where your Google Business Profile, reviews and content matter more than advanced technical SEO.
- You are testing an idea and may change direction within a year.
A middle path works well: hire a professional to set up structure, design and SEO foundations on the builder, then maintain content yourself. Clutch lists website-builder specialists mostly at US$25–$49 per hour.
When a custom website is worth it
A custom website pays for itself when the site is a revenue or operations tool and the builder's limits start costing you leads, time or rankings. It also makes sense when you cannot accept platform lock-in, for example because the site is a long-term asset or part of a product.
- The site must integrate with your CRM, ERP, booking or quoting logic.
- You publish complete versions in English and French, or for several countries, and need precise hreflang and URL control.
- You compete on searches where many strong sites already rank and every template and page type needs to be tuned.
- You need accounts, dashboards or a client portal.
- You want the right to move hosts or providers without rebuilding.
Decision table
Use this table as a quick check. If most of your answers fall in the right column, get quotes for a custom build; if they fall on the left, start with a builder and revisit in two years.
| Question | Builder (Wix, Squarespace) | Custom website |
|---|---|---|
| Budget over 3 years | About CA$1,150–$4,100 in plans and optional setup | From about CA$8,900 at ZeniTech, hosting and maintenance included |
| Who edits content | You, in a visual editor | You in a CMS, or your provider |
| Core Web Vitals | Strong on real-user data | As good as the build: set targets in the contract |
| SEO and GEO | Solid basics, limited fine control | Full control of templates, data and languages |
| Integrations | App market, off-the-shelf | Anything your process needs |
| Leaving the platform | Wix: not exportable; Squarespace: partial .xml | Code, hosting and domain in your name |
| Best for | Simple local presence, testing, tight budgets | Lead engines, bilingual sites, custom workflows |
What ZeniTech offers
ZeniTech is a web, app, automation and AI agency in Québec City that works remotely with businesses across North America and French-speaking Europe. We will tell you when a builder is enough. When a custom site is the better fit, prices are fixed in advance, in Canadian dollars before taxes: brochure site from CA$3,500 (approx. US$2,470 or €2,173), professional site CA$7,500 (approx. US$5,294 or €4,656), e-commerce from CA$12,000, hosting and maintenance CA$150 per month, and out-of-scope work CA$125 per hour.
The code, the domain and the hosting are in the client's name, so you keep the portability that builders cannot offer.

Frequently asked questions
Is Wix good for SEO?
For most small business sites, yes. Wix lets you edit titles, descriptions, URLs and redirects, and real-user data from the HTTP Archive shows 81.2% of Wix origins had good mobile Core Web Vitals in August 2026. The limits show on competitive searches, where you need fine control over structured data, bilingual hreflang and page templates. Relevance and content still matter more than the platform.
Is a website builder cheaper than hiring a web developer?
In cash, almost always. Three years of Wix Core costs about US$1,044 on annual billing, while a custom brochure site at ZeniTech costs from CA$8,900 over three years with hosting and maintenance. The builder figure excludes your own time, which can be substantial. Compare total cost against what the site must achieve, not the monthly price alone.
Can I export my Wix site to another host?
No. Wix's Help Center states that a Wix site must run on Wix's servers because the platform relies on proprietary technology. You can use a domain registered elsewhere, but moving away from Wix means rebuilding the site. Keep your own copies of text and images so a future rebuild is faster.
Squarespace vs custom website: which is better?
Squarespace is better for a design-focused site that you will maintain yourself on a small budget; its plans run from CA$21 to CA$109 a month on annual billing. A custom site is better when you need integrations, full multilingual control or portability. Squarespace's export is partial: store pages, product blocks and styles do not export.
Are custom websites faster than Wix?
Not automatically. In the HTTP Archive's August 2026 data, 81.2% of Wix origins passed Core Web Vitals on mobile, compared with 35.1% of sites detected as using Next.js, a common framework for custom builds. A custom site can be very fast, but only when performance targets are written into the project and measured before launch.
Can I start on Wix and move to a custom site later?
Yes, and it is a sensible path for many businesses. Plan for a rebuild rather than a transfer, keep your content outside the platform, and list every URL so you can set up 301 redirects when you move. That protects the search traffic the builder site has earned.
Do I need a special platform to appear in AI answers?
No. Google states there are no additional requirements or special optimizations to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, and no AI text files or special schema are needed. Clear pages that answer questions directly, with accurate facts and consistent business information, help on any platform.
